JACKSONVILLE -- Jacksonville State belted three homeruns Sunday in a 10-7 come-from-behind win to complete a sweep of Southeast Missouri State.

JSU (16-16, 9-3 OVC)has now won seven of its last nine games and improved to 9-3 in the Ohio Valley Conference.

Trailing 4-0 entering the bottom of the third inning, JSU's bats woke up and scored four runs in each of its next two at-bats, with big blows coming from Clay Whittemore and Steven Leach. Following a lead-off double by Todd Cunningham in the third, a single by Bert Smith and a walk by Leach, Whittemore (3) tied the game with one swing of the bat with his first career grand slam.

Then in the fourth, Jake Sharrock singled and scored on Smith's bunt single to third to give JSU its first lead of the day at 5-4. Leach (1) then blasted a three-run shot over the left field wall to stretch JSU's lead to 8-4.

The Gamecocks picked up insurance runs in the sixth when Leach singled home Sharrock from third and in the seventh when Andrew Edge (2) homered to left.

"Our guys have just been fantastic when they've fallen behind," head coach Jim Case said. "They continue to battle. Clay (Whittemore) was able to come up with a big hit for us when we were down four runs. We kept pecking away at them offensively and it was one of those days, with the wind blowing out where you never feel comfortable with any lead."

Each of JSU's first three hitters in the lineup finished with three hits. Leach finished the day 3-for-3 with two walks and four RBI. Smith had one RBI on the day and was 10-for-15 in the series. Freshman lead-off man Todd Cunningham was also 3-for-5 Sunday.

In relief of John David Smelser, Brian Booth, Mitch Miller and Alex Jones combined to allow just three runs on five hits with nine strikeouts through the final six innings. Booth threw three innings to earn the win and improve to 2-0 while Jones picked up his fifth save of the season.

"Booth did a great job on the hill of restoring some order to the game," Case said. "Then when Alex (Jones) got the ball he was fantastic."

Case elected to bring Jones into the game with one out and one on in the seventh. Jones struck out the next two batters in the inning to get out of a jam. He struck out four in 2.2 innings of work.

Things started a little rough for JSU as SEMO (14-14, 6-5 OVC) jumped out to an lead for the second time in as many days. The Redhawks scored two in the first when Jim Kocke and Tyrell Cummings hit consecutive balls off the wall in centerfield. Then Matt Wagner fisted a ball over Leach's head at first to score Cummings. Nick Harris led off the second inning with a solo homerun and Cummings doubled and scored in the third.

JSU will play midweek games on the road at Troy on Tuesday and at home vs. Alabama State on Wednesdaby before getting back into OVC action at Eastern Illinois next weekend.
