NASHVILLE – A tip-in at the buzzer by Jerrell Houston spoiled an impressive second-half comeback by the Gamecocks and handed Tennessee State a dramatic 59-57 win in Ohio Valley Conference action on Thursday night.
In a game where both teams involved were trying to snap losing skids of at least three games, the Gamecocks (8-9, 2-6 OVC) used a 21-2 second half run to turn a 10-point lead for the Tigers (6-12, 4-4 OVC) into a 51-42 JSU advantage. The Tigers stormed back, holding JSU without a field goal for the final 4:31 and converting on five of their final six attempts from the floor to snap their three game skid and hand the Gamecocks their fifth-straight loss.
Brandon Crawford led the Gamecocks with 17 points, 12 in the second half, while grabbing a career-high nine rebounds. The Montgomery, Ala., native scored the Gamecocks' first seven points of the second half to help ignite a JSU run that erased a 10-point halftime deficit and put the Gamecocks up by as many as nine in the final eight minutes.
Sophomore Jeremy Bynum was the only other JSU player in double figures in the scoring column, scoring 12 points on a night that saw him start the game stone cold from the floor. The Oxford, Ala., native finished the night just 5-for-14 from the field, 2-for-8 from behind the arc. Bynum came just two rebounds short of a double-double with a career-high-tying eight.
The Tigers turned to player that hasn't been productive for them so far in the season. Sophomore center Gresham Jordan, a 6-foot-6, 309-pound forward that also plays tight end for the TSU football team, scored a game-high 21 points on 10-of-11 shooting and grabbed 10 rebounds after entering the game with just 50 points on the season and a career-high of 10 points. Sophomore Gerald Robinson scored 16 points for TSU, while Houston recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
The Gamecocks struggled from the floor for most of the night, connecting on just 38 percent of their attempts from the field, while Tennessee State was successful on 48 percent of their attempts. JSU used a 36-31 advantage on the glass to outscore the Tigers 20-9 in the paint. The Tigers got five more points from the free throw line, hitting 13 while JSU attempted just 11 and made eight.
The Tigers hung around early in the first half, thanks to Jordan, who set his career scoring high with 13 of TSU's first 19 points. The Gamecocks and Tigers exchanged the lead twice before a 13-1 Tennessee State run put the Tigers up 30-17 with just under two minutes remaining. The Gamecocks were able to pull to within 10 at 32-22 before going into the locker room at the half.
The Gamecocks stormed out of the gates in the second half, using a 29-8 run to build a 51-42 lead with 7:14 to play. JSU would lead by nine again at 55-46 with 4:31 left on a Crawford layup, a shot that would mark the Gamecocks' final field goal of the game.
The Tigers nipped away at the lead, setting up a reverse layup by Jordan with 1:07 remaining that tied the game at 57-57. Crawford attempt to take the lead with 34 seconds to play missed, setting the stage for Houston's game winner. Jordan picked up a loose ball and threw up an attempt that was long, but Houston caught the shot on the right side of the rim and put it in as the horn sounded.
The Gamecocks will travel to Clarksville, Tenn., where they will face league-leading Austin Peay at 7:30 p.m. CT in the second game of JSU's current four-game road swing. The game will be broadcast live on the JSU Radio Network with Mike Parris calling the action.
