CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Despite being in the middle of an ice storm in the Midwest, sophomore Jeremy Bynum was red hot on Thursday night, scoring a season-high 26 points to lead the Jacksonville State men's basketball team to a 78-68 win over Southeast Missouri at the Show Me Center.
Bynum, a native of Oxford, Ala., was 8-for-12 from the floor, including a 5-for-7 effort from behind the 3-point line, to help the Gamecocks (9-10, 3-7 Ohio Valley Conference) snap their season-long six-game losing skid and hand the Redhawks (3-19, 0-11 OVC) their 11th-straight loss. He came up one point shy of his career high while cracking the 20-point mark for the second consecutive game.
“I thought that Bynum's play on both ends of the court was tremendous,” JSU head coach James Green said. “We have been working with him to make those plays on defense, but realistically, we need him to make baskets in order to create baskets for the rest of our guys.”
The Gamecocks used a 10-0 run that started at the end of the first half and stretched into the start of the second to turn a one-point lead into a 39-28 advantage, and they never trailed. The Gamecocks' ability to hold off the Redhawks were due in large part to a 61-percent effort from the floor in the second half and an impressive night from the free throw line that saw JSU make 21 of its first 23 attempts and finish 27-of-34.
Bynum led a corps of four Gamecocks in double figures, a group that was highlighted by a 17-point night from sophomore Nick Murphy that saw the Bronx, N.Y., native go 11-of-12 from the charity stripe. His childhood friend from the Bronx, Geddes Robinson picked up his second career double-double with 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Bynum and Murphy each pulled in six boards to lead the Gamecocks to a 38-27 advantage on the glass. Freshman Stephen Hall added 10 points and four boards in 26 minutes off of the bench.
“Our guys did a good job tonight,” Green added. “It was the first time in a while that every single player made big plays and contributions, and when we do that, we will give ourselves a chance to win. This is a really, really good win for our guys.”
The Redhawks looked to their All-OVC post player, Calvin Williams, who led them with 23 points on 10-of-14 shooting. Kenard Moore added 19 for SEMO, who shot just 65 percent from the free throw line and nine percent from behind the arc.
Bynum and Murphy led the Gamecocks to a 32-28 lead at the end of a first half that saw five ties and three lead changes. The two each scored 11 points to account for over two-thirds of JSU's offensive production, and both got their points by different means. Bynum used three 3-pointers, the last of which fell in the final second of the half, to account for the bulk of his, while Murphy went 9-for-9 from the charity stripe in the half.
Bynum and Geddes Robinson each grabbed six boards to lead the Gamecocks to an 18-17 advantage on the boards in the first half, an advantage that helped JSU overcome a 36-percent effort from the floor.
Williams had 10 points to lead SEMO, who shot 43 percent in the first 20 minutes. The Redhawks were 0-for-4 from behind the arc before the half, while JSU hit three of its eight attempts from behind the arc.
After the Gamecocks jumped out to a 57-44 lead in the second half, SEMO managed to pull to within three points at 65-62 with 4:23 to play. The Gamecocks scored the next six points to build a cushion big enough to hold onto for the win.
The Gamecocks wrap up their four-game road swing on Saturday evening, when they take on Eastern Illinois in Charleston, Ill. Tipoff is set for 7:15 p.m. CT, and the game will be broadcast live on the JSU Radio Network.
