JSU Women’s Basketball Falls To Western Illinois

SAN ANTONIO, Texas
– Erica Lewis recorded a double-double to lead Western Illinois (2-3) to a 49-43 win over Jacksonville State (0-5) in game one of the UTSA Thanksgiving Classic on Friday.

Lewis scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds while going six-for-11 from the floor. Jordon O'Brien followed with 10 points and five rebounds along with two blocks and three steals.

The Gamecocks were held to a season low 43 points while shooting 32 percent. Brittany Wiley and Danielle Beneby led JSU with 10 points. Candice Carmine collected a team and career-high eight rebounds followed by Jolie Efezokhae and Beneby with six rebounds.

The Gamecocks rally from a late nine-point deficit late came up short. Jordan O'Brien hit two free throws to put the Leathernecks up 47-38 with 56 seconds left in the second half.

Wiley connected on a three-pointer and then had a steal and a layup to trim the lead to 47-43 with 18 seconds to go but Ann Borgertpoepping sank two free throws with 17 seconds to close out the scoring on the night..

Carmine led the Gamecocks with eight first half points as JSU shot 35 percent from the floor while holding the Leathernecks to 29.6 percent. Lewis scored nine points, including a pair free throws with 1:48 left in first half to give the WIU a 22-21 halftime lead.

The Gamecocks wrap up play in the UTSA Thanksgiving Classic against host Texas-San Antonio on Saturday at 5 p.m.
