Gamecocks Sign Impressive Class for 2009
2/3/2009 10:24:32 PM | Football
JACKSONVILLE - Head football Coach Jack Crowe calls the 2009 Jacksonville State University signees the best he has ever signed, and it's hard to argue with that when you look at the credentials of the class.
Crowe announced the 2009 class during a luncheon on campus to more than 100 people, including the University President, members of the Board of Trustees, key officials, top boosters, avid supporters and members of the media.
“We're very excited about the class that we've signed,” Crowe told the audience. “We feel like we've met all our needs for next season and the years to follow with this talented group of recruits.”
The class is highlighted by a pair of junior college pass rushers that fills a critical need, according to Crowe.
"We wanted some big, physical pass rushers and I think we got them," Crowe said. "I think we got some players that a lot of other schools wanted. We feel like we've signed two quality junior college players should help fill the void."
The Gamecocks signed Kevin Dix from Dodge City Community College and Josh Lewis from East Central (Miss.) Community College.
Crowe also said another priority was at the offensive tackle position and the tenth year head coach is pleased with the incoming freshman at the position.
“We had to have some help at the offensive tackle position and we feel like Ricky Clemons could make an immediate impact,” said Crowe. “We feel like Ricky will fit right in and help this team contend for the OVC Championship.”
Clemons, who was a three-year starter at Carman Ainsworth HS in Flint, Michigan, was a first-team All-State selection and was also named the team's Offensive Line Most Valuable Player in 2008.
Crowe says that several players from this signing class should get an opportunity to see valuable playing time during the 2009 season.
"I can see the opportunity for Ricky (Clemons) and a pair of receivers in Rayce (Whiddon) and Alan (Bonner) to get a chance to get on the field this fall,” added Crowe.
Bonner was a first-team All-State selection both as a junior and senior at Newnan (Ga.) High School and finished with 54 catches for more than 1,100 yards and 15 touchdowns as a senior. Whiddon, from Niceville, Fla., will be the third of the Whiddon brothers to play football for the Gamecocks and has 16 career touchdowns.
Jacksonville State, which finished with an 8-3 record in 2008, is scheduled to begin spring practice on March 4 and will play its spring game on April 11.
