JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State women's basketball team dropped a hard fought 75-69 Ohio Valley Conference decision to OVC favorite Eastern Illinois on Tuesday night at Pete Matthews Coliseum on the JSU campus.
JSU, which looked to carry the momentum gained after a 14-point win over Southeast Missouri on Sunday, fell to 3-8 overall on the season and 1-2 in the conference. EIU improved to 6-6 overall and 3-1 in league games. The EIU contest wrapped up the pre-Christmas competition for the Gamecocks as they will break for the holiday and return home to host Kennesaw State on Tuesday, Dec. 28. Tip off is set for 7 p.m.
A valiant second half effort by Danielle Vaughn carried Jax State in the final 20 minutes as it erased a three-point halftime deficit at 28-25. The sophomore from Huntsville, Ala. posted all of her 16 points in the final period and came within a rebound of recording her second double-double of the season. Three straight baskets to open the half knotted the contest at 31-31 with 18:40 left in the game. After back-to-back treys by EIU's Kelsey Wyss to give the Panthers a six-point edge, JSU battled back to eventually take a 45-43 lead at the 13:02 mark on a Brittany Wiley jumper. After EIU matched JSU at 45-all, it put together a 15-5 run over the next four minutes to take its largest lead at 60-50 with 8:30 left in the game.
The Gamecocks would chip away at the Panther lead and get within a basket on multiple occasions during the final five minutes. After slow starts shooting, both squads heated up in the second half as EIU connected on 54 percent of its shots, while the Red and White tallied 43 percent of its second period shots to register 44 points in the final period – a season-best for JSU in a half. For just the fifth time this season, JSU was out-rebounded 44-32.
Wiley matched Vaughn's 16 point total to help pace Jax State in the scoring column. Senior Zenobia Pitts pitched in seven points in her second-straight start. Brittany Manning and Amanda McCarthy added six points in the setback.
EIU placed four starters in double figures, led by Ta'Kenya Nixon's 20 point effort. Nixon scored 12 of her 20 points at the free throw line. Wyss finished with 15 points in the contest. Chantelle Pressley and Mariah King added 11 points each.
