Final Stats
JACKSONVILLE – A Mariah Robinson-led Murray State squad heated up Pete Mathews Coliseum as it topped Jacksonville State 80-66 in Ohio Valley Conference action.
Robinson poured in a career-high 44 points, including a school record nine three-pointers to lead the Racers to their first win in OVC play and pushed their overall mark to 5-11. After a pair of OVC road wins, JSU dropped to 6-11 on the season and 3-3 in league play. Robinson nearly broke the league's record for points scored by an individual player. Tennessee State's Carolyn Aldridge registered 51 points against Wake Forrest during the 1994-95 season. Her nine treys came up one shy of equaling the OVC record for three-pointers in a contest. Tennessee Tech's Stefanie Holbrook drilled ten versus Eastern Illinois in 2004-05.
As a team, MSU connected on 53 percent from the field, including 16-of-27 from the field in the second half. Jax State came within one shot attempt of matching its season-high as it hit just 25-of-72 (34.7%) of its shots. The Gamecocks were led by reining Adidas Player of the Week, Brittany Wiley, as she established a new career high with 27 points in the setback. Wiley bested her 23-point outing last season at Eastern Kentucky. The Carrollton, Ga.-native has registered double digit point totals in nine consecutive games. Brittany Manning, the OVC's Newcomer of the Week, added 14 points, while Destiny Lane came off the bench to add 10 points.
JSU stormed out to an early 14-5 lead with just over ten minutes left in the opening half, but MSU went on a run of its own with a 15-4 scoring spurt to take a one-point 19-18 edge with 7:06 left in the half. After a 28-28 deadlock with 1:39 left in the opening half, a jumper by Mary Jehlik and a three-pointer by Robinson, the Racers would take a 33-31 lead into the dressing room.
It didn't take long for the Racers to expand the lead as it pushed the deficit out to tem points by the 14:38 mark of the second half. JSU trimmed the lead down to five after back-to-back baskets by Danielle Beneby and Danielle Vaughn. That would be as close as the Red and White would get as MSU extended the lead back out to double figures the rest of the way after a Mallory Schwab lay up. The Blue and Gold held its largest lead of 18 points at 70-52 at the 4:10 mark.
MSU's Jessica Winfrey was the only other Racer to reach double figure point totals as she posted 12 points. Kayla Lowe added eight points in the win.
The Gamecocks will look to rebound in its final home contest in the month of January as it welcomes Tennessee-Martin to campus. Tip off is set for 2 p.m. at Pete Mathews Coliseum. UTM dropped a 74-57 road matchup to Tennessee Tech on Thursday.
