NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Jacksonville State notched its third consecutive road win in the Ohio Valley Conference with a 77-73 decision over Tennessee State on Thursday night to begin a four-game road trip.
The Gamecocks improved to 4-4 in OVC play and 7-12 overall. TSU dropped to 2-6 in the conference and 6-12 on the season.
Junior Brittany Wiley enjoys playing against the Lady Tigers of TSU as she has been a thorn in their side for the past three seasons. In her three prior contests, Wiley has recorded double digit point outings and Thursday night was no different. The Carrollton, Ga.-native turned in a career best 28 points to lead all scorers in the contest. Wiley posted 12 points by the halftime break and tallied 12 points off the free throw line in the second half.
Wiley's final two free throw makes were key down the stretch after TSU cut the Jax State lead down to 75-73 with 24 seconds left in the contest. She knocked down both from the charity stripe to preserve the four-point win.
JSU took a 40-39 lead into the dressing room after senior Zenobia Pitts came off the bench to spark the Red and White with 14 of her career-high 18 points in the first 20 minutes. The Gamecocks pushed their advantage out to 60-50 at the midway point of the final period after a pair of Wiley free throws. JSU maintained a pair of 11 point leads on back-to-back trips down the floor with just under seven minutes left in the contest.
TSU strung together a 12-4 scoring run over the next two minutes to get within a basket after a Meredith Stafford lay up. Stafford scored eight of her 12 points in the second half. Tayla Foster finished with a career-high 22 points in the setback.
After being held scoreless against UT Martin, senior Danielle Beneby turned in 13 points, including nine from behind the 3-point arc. Danielle Manning, the league's current Adidas OVC Newcomer of the Week honoree, pitched in six points.
JSU returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 22 in Clarksville, Tenn. against Austin Peay. Tip off is set for 5:15 p.m. and can be heard on the Gamecock Sports Network.
