SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The NFL Players Association Game announced that Jacksonville State offensive lineman Curt Porter has been selected to participate in its fifth annual all-star challenge set to kick off at the Alamodome on Saturday, February 5.
Porter, a native of Fayette, Ala., was a first-team All-American selection by the Association Press, and a second-team selection by The Sports Network at offensive line. He was also a first-team All-Ohio Valley Conference in 2010 after leading the Gamecocks to a 9-3 record and into the second round of the NCAA playoffs.
Porter graded out at 92 percent for the season, and led the team with 81 knockdowns from his offensive tackle position. The senior led the offensive line with 761 snaps, 24 pancakes and finished with 293 bonus points. He was also one of the captains on the 2010 Gamecock team and he received his degree during Jacksonville State's December graduation.
He becomes the second Gamecock to play in the game, joining former OVC Player of the Year Ryan Perrilloux's 2010 selection. Porter will play for team Nation
“Out of the five rosters we've put together, this is probably our best top to bottom,” said John Murphy Player Personnel Director of the NFL Players Association Game. “At this point, it looks like this is the highest number of players we've ever had on our roster that will receive invitations to the NFL Combine in late February.”
“We're excited about the way the talent has shaped up,” added Kenny Hansmire, CEO of Overtime Sports Southwest, LLC, which is bringing the game to San Antonio for the first time. “San Antonio will be looking at players who have not only had stellar collegiate careers but are very likely to be playing on Sundays in the future.”
Former Houston Oiler and Atlanta Falcons head coach Jerry Glanville will coach Team Nation against former Dallas Cowboy Bill Bates for Team Texas. UTSA head football coach Larry Coker will assist Bates with Team Texas.
The NFL Players Association Game will feature NFL draft-eligible senior college football players with connections to the State of Texas in an all-star game against players from all other states. Over 400 players who have played in the NFL Players Association Game have gone on to sign NFL contracts over the game's four-year history.
The 2011 event will be the first time the game has been played in San Antonio after spending its first four years in El Paso, Texas. Kickoff is at 1:00 pm CST on Saturday, February 5, 2011 in San Antonio's Alamodome.
