
Calvin Middleton Rushes Gamecocks to 22-21 Win Over Southeast Missouri

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Calvin Middleton rushed for 191 yards and three touchdowns to lead Jacksonville State to a 22-21 come-from-behind win over Southeast Missouri State as the Gamecocks are back tied for the lead in the Ohio Valley Conference .
The Gamecocks snapped a three-game losing skid and improved to 6-4 on the season to post their ninth straight winning seasons under Jack Crowe. It also marks the 43rd winning season for JSU and the 5-2 OVC record is also tied with Eastern Kentucky and Tennessee Tech.
Jax State rallied from a 21-9 deficit to post its sixth come-from-behind win of the year. As a matter of fact, the Gamecocks have 13 come-from-behind wins since the start of the 2010 season.
“This was a tough, hard fought football game,” said JSU head coach Jack Crowe. “We challenged the defense at the half and they responded by shutting them out in the second half. I thought they really played well over the final two quarters.”
Trailing 21-9 at the half, the Gamecocks came out and took the second half kickoff and went 75 yards in 13 plays to cut the lead to 21-16 after Middleton scored his second touchdown of the day on a one-yard run on fourth down.
The Gamecock defense held to force a SEMO punt, and Jax State then marched 91 yards in 10 plays to take the lead for good.
Middleton scored on an 11-yard run with just :17 left in the third quarter to give Jax State a 22-21 lead headed into the final quarter.
The JSU defense held Southeast Missouri to just 98 yards on 25 plays as the Redhawks had just four drives in the second half.
Coty Blanchard, who missed the first 14 minutes of the game due to spasms in his back, came off the bench to finish 7-for-9 for 52 yards, while rushing 10 times for 83 yards on the ground. JSU also finished with 410 yards of total offense for the second straight game and for the fifth time this season.
The Redhawks took the early lead after going 70 yards in just four plays and Spencer Davis scored on a 39-yard run to give SEMO a 7-0 lead with 13:00 left.
The Gamecocks got on the scoreboard after James Esco connected on a 41-yard field goal with 4:55 left in the first quarter to cut the lead to 7-3.
Southeast then extended the lead to 14-3 with 1:06 left in the first quarter after Ron Coleman scored on a one-yard run to cap a 65-yard, 10-play drive for the Redhawks.
Jax State then marched 87 yards in 13 plays midway through the second quarter and cut the lead to 14-9 after Calvin Middleton broke free for a 17-yard touchdown run with 3:10 remaining in the second quarter.
The Redhawks then went 62 yards in three plays and Matt Scheible raced 38 yards to give Southeast a 21-9 lead at the half.
Scheible led the Redhawks rushing attack with 209 yards on 27 carries, while going 5-for-13 with two interceptions for 26 yards through the air. The OVC leading tackler Blake Peiffer finished with 19 tackles, including nine solo stops.
Jacksonville State travels to Nashville next week to face Tennessee State. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at LP Field.

Calvin Middleton finished with a career-high 191 rushing yards, his first 100-yard rushing game of the season and the third of his career. His previous career-high was 121 yards on 13 carries vs UTM on Oct. 3, 2009.
Calvin Middleton had a career-high three rushing touchdowns in the game, and it was the second time he has rushed for two-or more touchdowns this season (EIU). It marks the fifth time in his career the senior RB has had two-or more rushing touchdowns in a game.
Jax State rushed for more than 342 yards and it marks just the second time the Gamecocks have rushed for 300 yards or more in consecutive games. The last time was during the 2001 season (Sept. 22 at Arkansas State {324}; Oct. 6 at Samford {314}).
Three Gamecocks earned their first career start today, including Thomas Darrah (QB), Johnny Ubi (OL) and Lequinted Reynolds (RB). Jax State has now had 16 players make their first career start during the 2011 season.

Sophomore QB Coty Blanchard entered the game with 1:00 left in the first quarter. Blanchard missed most of the first quarter with back spasms.
Senior Jawaan Booker recorded his second interception of the season late in the second quarter. It was the third interception of Booker's career.
Demitrio Tyson intercepted his first career interception and it was the 14th interception of the season for the Gamecocks. JSU leads the OVC with 14 interceptions this season.
Junior Washan Ealey did not play in the game and still has 999 rushing yards on the season. He is looking to become the 10th player in JSU football history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season.
JSU head coach Jack Crowe announced prior to the game that sophomore linebacker Clarence Jackson has been indefinitely suspended from the football team for violations of team rules.
