MURRAY, Ky. – A valiant Jacksonville State effort fell short as Murray State edged JSU 69-66 in Ohio Valley Conference action on Saturday evening.
The Gamecocks fall to 9-17 overall and 6-9 in league games. The Racers moved to 7-18 on the season and 3-11 in the OVC. The three-point win clinches the season sweep for the Racers over Jax State.
After trailing as many as 12 points twice and as late as the 6:45 mark of the second half, JSU got within a point at 64-63 just under the two minute-mark and matched the Racers at 64-64 at the 1:08 mark after putting together a 21-9 scoring spurt over a five-minute span.
MSU re-gained the lead on a three-point play by Mariah Robinson with 53 seconds left on the clock. After a quick Danielle Beneby basket and a free throw by MSU's Rachael Isom, Jax State had a chance to tie the game with a pair of free throws from Candice Carmine, but both rimmed out. A last ditch 3-point effort from Destiny Lane fell short as time expired.
Playing with just seven players, four of the five starters reached double-digits in the scoring column, led by Beneby's 15 points. Beneby also pulled down six rebounds and credited with four steals. Junior Brittany Manning finished with 13 points, including a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe. Carmine posted a career-effort on the boards with a career-best 18 rebounds to go along with her 15 points. Carmine came down with 12 offensive boards in the setback. Danielle Vaughn scored eight of her 10 points in the final period. Lane, who played 38 of the 40 minutes, added nine points.
Robinson and Mallory Schwab led the Racers in scoring with 14 points each. Robinson torched the Gamecocks for 44 points in the first meeting of the year in Jacksonville. Schwab's point total was a season-best.
JSU returns home next weekend to close out the 2010-11 home schedule as it welcomes Austin Peay on Thursday, Feb 17. Tip off is slated for 7 p.m. at Pete Mathews Coliseum. The JSU-APSU duel has been designated at Paint “The Pete” Night in support of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's Pink Zone initiative. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game. Jax State will honor its two seniors prior to Saturday's 2 p.m. contest with Tennessee State.
