Final Stats
JACKSONVILLE – Allie Turner's lay up with seven tenths of a second left in the game lifted Morehead State past Jacksonville State, 65-64, in a thrilling Ohio Valley Conference contest at Pete Mathews Coliseum on Thursday evening.
MSU moved to 17-7 on the season and 10-2 in league play. Jax State, who has just claimed one OVC win on its home floor this season, dropped to 8-15 overall and 5-7 in the OVC.
Just like the previous meeting between the Gamecocks and Eagles, the final minute and a half was frenzy. After JSU's Danielle Vaughn tied the game for the sixth time with a lay up with 2:19 left to play, MSU's Chynna Bozeman knocked down a pair of free throws to give the visiting Eagles a two-point edge. Jax State would trim it to 63-62 on Brittany Manning's made free throw on the front end of a 1-and-1 with just 17 seconds left in the contest. JSU sent MSU's Ashar Harris to the charity stripe, but she could not convert. JSU junior Brittany Wiley gave what looked to be the game-winning shot with 4.5 ticks left on the game clock.
The Eagles set up a play that allowed Turner to drive to the bucket for the game winner. Turner was in a similar spot in the game in Morehead as she was at the free throw line for a pair to send the game into a second overtime, but her second attempt rimmed out.
Jax State dominated the game statistically as it knocked down 45 percent of its shots and out-rebounded the Blue and Yellow Eagles, 46-34. It's the first time this season in OVC play that the Gamecocks have pulled down more rebounds than the opposition and
lost the game. The Eagles forced 19 Jax State miscues, turning them into 15 points on the other end.
MSU had no answer for JSU's Vaughn as the sophomore post player shared game-high scoring honors with Bozeman of MSU. Both players finished with 22 points in the contest. Vaughn, a product of Huntsville, Ala., registered her second double-double in as many outings and her fifth of the season. JSU limited Bozeman to 17 points under her 39 point total she rallied off in Morehead.
Vaughn led four Gamecocks who reached double digit status in the scoring column. Senior Danielle Beneby also carded a double-double in the setback with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Beneby posted 10 of her final 15 points in the second half. The last time a pair of Gamecocks tallied double-double is the same contest was last season against Tennessee State.
Wiley finished with 12 points after knocking down a pair of 3-pointers in the second half. Destiny Lane also pitched in 12 points.
MSU's Harris finished with 20 points, while Turner was credited with 14 points.
JSU returns to the hardwood on Saturday, Feb. 5 as it entertains the Lady Colonels of Eastern Kentucky at 2 p.m. EKU dropped a 56-49 decision to OVC leader Tennessee Tech on Thursday.
