Jacksonville State's Curt Porter and T.J. Heath have both agreed to free agent contracts to play professional football, the duo announced one day after the NFL lockout ended.
Porter has signed with the Denver Broncos, while Heath signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Porter, a native of Fayette, Ala., was a first-team All-American selection by the Association Press, and a second-team selection by The Sports Network at offensive line. He was also a first-team All-Ohio Valley Conference in 2010 after leading the Gamecocks to a 9-3 record and into the second round of the NCAA playoffs.
Porter graded out at 92 percent for the season, and led the team with 81 knockdowns from his offensive tackle position. The senior led the offensive line with 761 snaps, 24 pancakes and finished with 293 bonus points. He was also one of the captains on the 2010 Gamecock team and he received his degree during Jacksonville State's December graduation.
Heath, a product of Alexandria High School, was named All-America as a junior in 2009 by three different national organizations, including the Associated Press and The Sports Network.
Heath led the Ohio Valley Conference in passes defended and led the Gamecocks with six interceptions, including returning two for touchdowns against UT Martin. The defensive back also led the team with 10 pass break-ups and also forced a fumble and blocked a kick, while recording 34 total tackles during his All-American season.
Jacksonville State finished one of the most successful seasons in the school's Division I history, posting a 9-3 overall record, and was ranked as high as No. 2 during the 2010 season. JSU also advanced to the second round of the NCAA playoffs and hosted its first home playoff game in 18 years at the newly renovated Burgess-Snow Field at JSU Stadium.
The 2010 senior class will be remembered as the winningest four-year class since the Gamecocks left the Division II ranks in 1993. The senior class finished with a four-year record of 31-13, which is the most wins of any other four-year class since JSU moved to Division I.
Jacksonville State the talk of the football world on the opening weekend following a thrilling 49-48 double overtime road win over Ole Miss. The Gamecocks were the lead story on ESPN, ESPN News and College Game Day following the “Biggest upset of the 2010 season”.
