MONTGOMERY – The Jacksonville State volleyball team improved to 4-0 on the season after picking up two more victories on Saturday in the ISTAP Invitational hosted by Alabama State.
With the two wins over South Dakota and Alabama State, JSU claimed the Team Championship. Senior
Kelsey Anderson was named tournament MVP while
Jen Meyer was named to the all-tournament team.
The Gamecocks survived an exciting 3-2 (17-25, 12-25, 25-21, 25-23, 15-13) victory over South Dakota in the first match of the day. After dropping the first two sets, Anderson, senior
Hivya Leite, and Meyer helped turned things around for the Gamecocks.
Anderson, who made her debut for the Gamecocks on Friday after transferring from Alabama, recorded her-third straight double-double, recording 12 kills and 11 digs. Leite and Meyer also recorded double digits in kills with 13 kills and 10 kills, respectively.
Defensively, junior setter
Abbey Heredia recorded a double-double with 25 assists and 11 digs while junior
Kelly Cole registered 24 digs.
The Gamecocks had a much easier time in the second game of the day by sweeping the host school Alabama State. The Gamecocks breezed through the Lady Hornets by scores of 25-16, 25-17 and 25-18.
Meyer once again led the way for the Gamecocks with 11 kills on an impressive .786 hitting percentage. Anderson and Sophomore
Nicole Merget added eight kills for the Gamecocks.
The Gamecocks will be on the road once again next weekend as the team will travel to play in the Auburn Invitational.
