JACKSONVILLE – After a week of very few upsets, the Top 10 went unchanged in both polls and Jacksonville State remained third in STATS and fourth in the Coaches Polls that were released on Monday.
The Gamecocks (4-1, 1-0 Ohio Valley Conference), along with all of the other teams in the top 10 spots in each poll, stayed put after Week Six of the 2016 season. JSU opened OVC play with a convincing 40-21 win over Tennessee Tech that saw the two-time defending conference champs build an early 33-7 lead in the second quarter and coast.
Jax State extended its OVC win streak to 18 games, the longest active conference win streak in the nation, and extended the FCS' longest home winning streak to 10 games. The Gamecocks will host Austin Peay on Saturday at 1 p.m.
North Dakota State and Sam Houston State held on to the top two spots, respectively, in both polls, while Eastern Washington was fourth and Chattanooga fifth in the STATS Poll. The coaches voted UTC third again, just ahead of JSU, while EWU remained fifth. Eastern Illinois (18th in STATS, 17th in Coaches) is the only other OVC team in either poll, with Tennessee State receiving votes in both.
The release of this week's polls marks the 37th consecutive week that JSU has been ranked in the Top 10 of at least one of the two polls, dating back to the final poll of the 2014 season. JSU and North Dakota State are the only two teams that have been in the Top 10 for each week during that time.
JSU and the Governors will kick off at 1 p.m. Saturday at Burgess-Snow Field on what will be Fall Preview Day on the JSU campus. Tickets can be purchased in advance at www.jsugamecocksports.com for just $10 and are $15 if purchased in person or on game day.
