BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Jacksonville State senior Jaylen Hill has been named the Ohio Valley Conference's Adidas Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Sunday.
Hill, a cornerback from Marietta, Ga., received the honor for his efforts in helping the #2 Gamecocks (6-1, 3-0 OVC) to a 24-7 win at Eastern Kentucky on Saturday. The win was driven by a stellar defensive performance, one Hill played a large role in.
Hill had two of JSU's five interceptions and returned on of them 60 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter. The pick-six was one of three interception returns for a score for JSU, a school record and one away from the FCS record. The five picks were one off of the school record of six set against Samford in 1995.
Hill and the JSU defense scored all three of the Gamecocks' touchdowns in the win and held what was the OVC's top offensive attack to almost 200 yards under its season average. The Colonels entered the game averaging 457 yards per game and only mustered 260 against the Gamecocks on Saturday.
Hill's first interception was the one he returned for a score and it came with JSU leading by just a touchdown late n the second quarter. His final pick came in the fourth quarter at the Gamecocks' 11-ayrd line and thwarted EKU's final hope of a comeback attempt.
Hill and the Gamecocks return to action on Saturday for Homecoming on the JSU campus. They will host No. 15 Eastern Illinois at 2 p.m. on Burgess-Snow Field. Tickets can be purchased online in advance for just $10 at www.jsugamecocksports.com/tickets.
