HERO Sports FCS Freshman All-America Team
JACKSONVILLE – After his stellar freshman season for the Jacksonville State football team, safety Marlon Bridges added a Freshman All-America honor to his list of accolades on Wednesday.
The 2016 Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year and First Team All-OVC safety, Bridges was named to HERO Sports FCS Freshman All-America First Team when the team was announced. It comes one week after he was a Third Team All-America selection by STATS.
Bridges stormed onto the scene as a freshman for the Gamecocks. The Lanett, Ala., native led one of the nation's top defenses with 87 tackles in his first year of collegiate action. He started every game at safety for JSU and was a First Team All-OVC pick.
He was one of the top players in the nation in terms of forcing turnovers in 2016. Bridges led the nation with five forced fumbles and was third among all freshmen with four interceptions. His nine takeaways led the OVC. He was tops on the team with six pass break-ups and defended another 10, while also recording four tackles for a loss.
He was a key component in a secondary that ranked seventh nationally in interceptions and scoring defense, fifth in rushing defense and first in third down conversion defense. They also ranked 16th nationally in defensive touchdowns and second in pass efficiency defense.
Bridges and the Gamecocks posted a perfect 7-0 record in OVC play to win JSU's third-straight conference title. The third-straight perfect record in OVC play marks the first time in conference history a team has been perfect in three-straight seasons and extended the longest active conference winning streak in all of Division I to 24 games.
