JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State and Andrews Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center are back together again with a new partnership announced by Athletics Director Greg Seitz earlier this week.
Â
The Gamecocks and one of the premier providers of Sports Medicine in the nation have joined forces again, with Andrews Sports Medicine becoming the official care provider for all of Gamecock Athletics. The two began working together in the 1980's and built a partnership that lasted for decades. That partnership has been renewed and it's one Seitz is thrilled to have back in Jacksonville.
Â
"When you think about the best athletes in the world, and who they turn to for sports medicine, the Andrews Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center is a name at the top of the list," Seitz said. "Athletes from around the world travel here for medical care and now our student-athletes will benefit from the excellent health care of the Andrews Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center.
Â
"We are thrilled to have the Andrews Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center as our official sports medicine provider as we continue to enhance our commitment to the student-athlete's well-being. This partnership allows Jacksonville State student-athletes to receive the highest level of medical care that is available in the world."
Â
Started by world-renowned orthopaedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews, Andrews Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center is based Birmingham and provides care for several professional and collegiate programs across the country. Their renewed partnership with the Gamecocks will have three doctors working directly with athletes from all 17 of JSU's varsity teams.
Â
Dr. Wayne McGough, Jr., an orthopaedic sports medicine surgeon, will serve as the Gamecocks' official orthopaedic surgeon and medical director, while Dr. Ricardo E. Colberg will serve as a non-surgical sports medicine physician. Dr. Lyle Cain, Jr., an orthopaedic sports medicine surgeon, will serve as the Gamecocks' senior orthopaedic consultant.
Â
"Dr. James Andrews started providing sports medicine coverage at Jacksonville State University in the late 1980's. I am honored, along with Dr. Ricardo Colberg, to lead the Gamecocks sports medicine team  - continuing the tradition of excellence in care and commitment to service Dr. Andrews' started at Jacksonville State decades ago." states Dr. Wayne McGough, Jr.
Â
McGough goes on to state, "In addition, we are excited to work alongside our medical partners, Champion Sports Medicine and St. Vincent's Health System, to provide integrated medical care for the Gamecocks' student-athletes. Champion Sports Medicine will manage the athletic department's physical therapy clinic, and will have certified athletic trainers on-site daily at Gamecocks' practices and games. All student-athletes who require surgery will have their procedures performed at St. Vincent's Birmingham."
