JSU Climbs Another Spot, Up To Third In This Week's Polls
10/9/2017 2:40:00 PM | Football
JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State football team climbed a spot in the polls for the second-straight week and now sits in third in both the STATS FCs Top 25 and the FCS Coaches Poll.
Following a convincing 34-14 win on Saturday at Austin Peay, who entered the week riding a three-game winning streak and receiving votes in both polls, JSU was recognized for its work by the voters of both major FCS polls on Monday.
The Gamecocks (4-1, 2-0 Ohio Valley Conference) extended the longest active conference win streak in all of Division I football to 26 games and tied the OVC record in the meantime. They tied Eastern Kentucky's record of 26-straight league wins from 1992-95 and will have the opportunity to break the record when the Colonels visit Burgess-Snow Field on Saturday.
The win also tied EKU and Appalachian State (26 Southern Conference wins from 2007-10) for the second-longest streak in FCS history. Duquesne (39 consecutive Metro Atlantic wins from 1999-06) holds the FCS record.
The latest rankings put the Gamecocks in the Top 10 for the 51st-straight week, a stretch that dates back to the final polls of the 2013 season. JSU has been in the Top six in at least one of the polls for 34-straight weeks now, dating back to the first week of the 2015 season. North Dakota State is the only other team to join JSU in both of those streaks.
The Bison are No. 2 in both polls, right behind defending national champion James Madison at No. 1. South Dakota is No. 4 in both polls after upsetting then-No. 4 Youngstown State last week, while Wofford rounds out the top five in both polls.
JSU is the only OVC team ranked in either poll, while Tennessee State and Eastern Illinois are receiving votes in both. Austin Peay and UT Martin are each receiving votes in the STATS FCS Top 25.
JSU goes for the OVC win streak record on Saturday, when it hosts EKU at 3 p.m. at Burgess-Snow Field. It will be Family Day and Preview Day on JSU's campus, and the game will cap the JSU Athletics Hall of Fame Weekend festivities. The four inductees to this year's class, Dr. William A. Meehan, Eric Mims, Daniela Pappano and Bill Smith, will be recognized at half time of the game.
Tickets are on sale now at JSUGamecockSports.com and are just $10 is purchased online in advance of game day. Tickets at the gate on Saturday will be $15 each.
