FINAL RESULTS
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Valentina Giraldo broke the school record for wins in a season on Tuesday, when she claimed medalist honors in the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Spring Classic.
The junior from Ibague, Colombia, won her third tournament of the 2017-18 season, the most in a season by any player in school history. She broke the record of two set by Angie Green in the 2001-02 season and did so through just six tournaments.
Her record-setting victory might just be her most impressive, coming in the largest field in the women's collegiate golf season at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Spring Classic. She used a 54-hole score of 211, the third-lowest in program history, to finish in a three-way tie for first atop the 218-player field.
Giraldo's final-round 74 on the par-72, 5,964-yard Osprey Point Golf Club to cap her three-day score of a 5-under 211. She shared the medalist honors with UNC Wilmington's Lyberty Anderson and Murray State's Lucila Puente Rodriguez.
Giraldo entered her junior season without an individual win in her collegiate career but changed that with the first tournament of the season when she won the JSU Chris Banister Golf Classic. She later won the Pinehurst Challenge and claimed a runner-up finish at the Little Rock Golf Classic.
She led JSU to an 18th-place finish in the 43-team event, one that saw the Gamecocks card a three-day score of 910. Host College of Charleston won the event.
Junior Paula Vega fifnished 70th after her final-round 82 capped a 228, while Valentina Curet's 82 finished her 235 and tied her for 129th. Pia Ohlenbusch finished tied for 137th with a 236, and Chloe Borders' 247 tied her for 188th.
JSU will return to the links on March 18, when the Gamecocks begin play in the Tennessee Tech Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate at the Sevierville Country Club in Sevierville, Tenn.
