JACKSONVILLE – Former Gamecock basketball standout Norbertas Giga was named to the Philadelphia 76ers NBA Summer League roster Thursday following a four-day mini camp at the team's training complex in Camden, N.J.
The seven-foot Giga was part of a 17-man group invited to participate in Philadelphia's mini camp earlier this week. He was one of just 10 from mini camp selected to the Sixers 14-man Summer League roster in Las Vegas.
"Camp was such a great, competitive experience," Giga said. "It was a lot different from playing college ball. It was an every-man-for-himself situation because everyone there is looking to make the cut. When one person would step up, that made you have to step up and be better."
Giga makes his NBA Summer League debut Friday, July 6 at 6:30 p.m. against the Boston Celtics on ESPN at Thomas and Mack Center. The 76ers are back in action Saturday, July 7 on ESPN at 10:30 p.m. against the Los Angeles Lakers and again on Monday, July 9 against the Washington Wizards on NBA TV at 4:30 p.m. All times are central. Following the three scheduled contests, each team will be seeded in a tournament that begins July 11 and concludes with the championship game on July 17. Philadelphia is guaranteed two games in the tournament.
Giga will be the first Gamecock to don an NBA jersey since Walker D. Russell was signed by the Detroit Pistons on January 20, 2012.
"I am just looking to get everything out of it I can," Giga said Thursday night. "I don't want to get lost in the moment. My goal is to compete as best I can, take full advantage of the opportunity I've been given and be on the roster when the season rolls around."
Giga, who graduated in May, spent two seasons in a Gamecock uniform. He joined head coach Ray Harper's first Jacksonville State squad for the 2016-17 season and led JSU to its first Division I conference championship in program history in the same year.
The forward appeared in 69 games and made 68 starts over his two-year career with the Gamecocks. He averaged 9.8 points per game and totaled 673 points in the short time. Giga received national attention in Jacksonville State's March Madness debut in 2017 when he dropped 30 points – including five 3-pointers – against No. 9 Louisville in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind.
