JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State's women's basketball team welcomes Jacksonville University to Pete Mathews Coliseum for the final non-conference home matchup of the season on Friday.
Â
Returning to the floor for the first time in 12 days, the Gamecocks (4-5) will host the Dolphins (6-5) at 6 p.m. on Friday for the final game before the Christmas break. JSU is looking to even its overall record after a slow start, but will do so on its home court where the Gamecocks have won their last eight contests dating back to last season.Â
Â
The meeting with the often-confused, Florida-based school 400 miles southeast of "The Friendliest Campus in the South", will mark the 11th time the two programs have met on the hardwood. JSU and JU were both members of the Atlantic Sun Conference from 2000-2003, until Jax State departed for the Ohio Valley Conference.
Â
JSU leads the series, 7-3, winning seven of the first eight meetings as conference foes. The series took a break from 2003 to 2011, before the two exchanged home-and-home meetings in 2011 and 2012, which both went the way of the Dolphins, who enter on a two-game winning streak, both in the series and overall. JU topped FIU on Sunday, before taking down a Florida A&M team, which JSU beat in November, on Tuesday.
Â
Junior Taylor Hawks, who leads JSU with 13.7 points per game, joins graduate-senior Destiney Elliott (12.7 PPG) as two of the top 10 scorers in the OVC to begin the year. Junior Jayla Walker is also coming off her career-high with 13 points in JSU's last game. Defensively, Jax State held Clark Atlanta to a season-low 46 points in its last outing, and will look to continue that trend against a JU squad that enters Friday's game averaging over 70 points per game.
Â
The Gamecocks and Dolphins will square off on ESPN+ with live stats available on JSUGamecockSports.com.
Â
Following a short break for Christmas, the Gamecocks will wrap up non-conference action at Auburn on Dec. 28.
