
Vega Leads Gamecock Women at UNF Collegiate

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Led by a 12th-place finish from Paula Vega, the Jacksonville State women's golf team finished 10th in the UNF Collegiate on Tuesday.
Vega turned in a 54-hole score of 220 on the par-72, 5,926-yard Jacksonville Golf and Country Club, tying for 12th in a 90-player field. The native of Medellin, Colombia, shot rounds of 67-75-78 to lead the Gamecocks in the event.
Her opening-round 67 tied for the third-lowest round in school history and was just two shots off of the school record. It was her second round in the 60s in her career, both of which have come in her senior season. She birdied seven holes in that opening round and entered the second round on Monday in a tie for the lead.
Her career day paced JSU to its top-10 finish in the 17-team event. Host North Florida won the event by three shots over Mercer.
Sophomores Valentina Curet and Ana Perez Altuna helped the Gamecocks with top-30 finishes in the event. Curet ties for 24th with a 223 that was capped by a final-round 72. She opened play with a 77 and 74 in Monday's two rounds. Altuna's 224 tied her for 29th after a 75 and 73 on Monday were followed by a final round 76.
Freshman Claire Vermette tied for 70th with a 233 that saw a 79 finish her tournament on Tuesday. Junior Pia Ohlenbusch finished 84th with a 247 that was finished by a final-round 83.
Hanna Alberto of Sam Houston State shot 209 to win medalist honors by a shot over UNF's Teresa Conroy.
