Women's tennis stays hot with 4-3 win over SEMO Saturday

JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State women's tennis team earned its third consecutive win Saturday with a 4-3 nail-biter over Southeast Missouri at the JSU Tennis Courts.

The Gamecocks (12-3, 5-1 OVC) sit in third place in the Ohio Valley Conference standings with two matches remaining in the regular season. JSU trails just Murray State (6-1) and Austin Peay (6-0) for the top spot in the league. APSU and Murray State also have two matches left to play, scheduled to meet on Friday, April 19 in Clarksville, Tenn.

Alba Conejero's three-set victory at No. 4 in singles play turned out to be the match-deciding contest in JSU's win over the Redhawks (9-9, 2-4 OVC).

Tied 3-3 with five singles matches complete and the doubles point already in the books, Conejero took the first set 6-3 over Anais Emelie. The second set went to Emelie as she battled back to take a lopsided 6-2 victory to tie the game. With the win on the line, the JSU junior outdueled the SEMO senior 6-2 to claim the win for the Gamecocks.

Jacksonville State went up 1-0 with the doubles victory. Conejero and Malin Buechner remained undefeated with a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles, improving to 10-0 for the season, while the team of Harriet Hamilton and Elena Tendero secured the point with a 6-3 win at No. 2.

After Hamilton fell in two sets to Romana Tarajova at No. 1 singles, Buechner get the Gamecocks back on track with a two-set win over Isabella Krupa at No. 3. Cristina Moll Alles put JSU up by two, 3-1, with her win at No. 6, but back-to-back losses at No. 2 and No. 5 tied the match 3-3 before Conejero would put away Emelie for her 10th singles win of the year.

The Gamecocks return to action Friday, April 19 at Belmont before wrapping up the regular season the following day at Tennessee State. The OVC Championships are set to take place Friday, April 26 – Sunday, April 28 in Nashville, Tenn.
