Vermette Leads Gamecocks At Amelia Island

FERNANDINA BRACH, Fla. – Claire Vermette tied for sixth and the Jacksonville State women's golf team finished ninth at the JU Amelia Island Collegiate on Tuesday.
Vermette finished the first event of the spring season with a 1-under 215, thanks to a final-round 70 on the par-72, 6,029-yard Amelia National Golf Club. The St. Petersburg, Fla., native climbed one spot up the leaderboard into sixth.
The score led the Gamecocks to a team score of 300 on Monday, capping a 54-hole score of 892. Florida Gulf Coast won the 15-team tournament with a 4-under 860, one shot ahead of second-place North Florida.
Vermette birdied three holes and made just one bogey in her final round, finishing just four shots behind co-medalists Hanna Kiefer of Stetson and Haley Yerxa of FGCU.
Junior Ana Perez Altuna had her best round of the tournament on Tuesday, carding an even-par 72 and finishing in a tie for 25th. Her 54-hole score of 222 was capped by a round with 16 pars, one birdie and just one bogey.
Junior Valentina Curet tied for 29th with a 223 after shooting 77 in her final round, while senior Chloe Borders shot 85 to finish off a 236 and tie for 68th. Senior Pia Ohlenbusch tied for 72nd with a 241 that was finished off by a Tuesday 81.
The Gamecocks will return to action on March 1-3, when they travel to Kiawah Island, S.C. for the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate. The 54-hole tournament will be played on the Osprey Point Golf Course.
