JACKSONVILLE – A pair of double-doubles led Jacksonville State's Brandon Huffman to being named Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week on Monday, as announced by the league office.
The 6-foot-10 senior was nearly unstoppable in OVC action last week at EKU and Morehead State, racking up 29 points, 26 rebounds and five blocks in the two contests. He shot nearly 50 percent from the field (11-for-25) and was 7-for-13 from the free-throw line despite a set of road losses.
Thursday's performance was one of the best of his career, tallying a career-high 16 points and 16 rebounds at Richmond's Alumni Coliseum. It was his first career double-double and the first for a Gamecock this season.
He followed up his big night against the Colonels with a 13-point, 10-rebound game at Morehead State. After trailing by as many as 10 points in the first half, Jax State went on a 12-5 run to narrow the Eagle lead to three at halftime, 29-26. During the stretch, Huffman scored eight points on three baskets and a pair of free throws.
Huffman is the second Gamecock to win OVC weekly honors this season. Junior Amanze Ngumezi was deemed Newcomer of the Week last week following a win against UT Martin.
Jacksonville State returns to Pete Mathews Coliseum to host Tennessee State on Thursday, Jan. 14 at 7:30 p.m. Belmont visits Jacksonville on Saturday, Jan. 16 at 4 p.m.
