
Rifle Finishes Third at 2021 OVC Rifle Championships

MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Jacksonville State rifle team wrapped up the 2021 Ohio Valley Conference Rifle Championships on Sunday, on the Morehead State campus.
The Gamecocks turned in a two-day aggregate score top-10 fin 4624 after adding a 2334 in air rifle on Sunday. JSU opened the championship with a 2290 in smallbore.
Juniors Owen Goad and Michael Dietz led Jax State as the duo turned in top-10 finishes. Goad, who shot a 577 on Saturday, returned to the range on Sunday ti add a 581. The Chatham, Va.-native finished with a final tally of 1158 to claim fifth place overall. Dietz collected a 584 in air rifle after a 572 in smallbore for a combined mark of 1156 to finish eighth in the combined standings.
The Gamecocks' air rifle score was bolstered by sophomore Kaila Jones' mark of 585. With her top-10 finish in air rifle, she was named to the Air Rifle All-OVC Second Team. It is the second consecutive year that Jones has gained all conference accolades. Junior Mackenzie Van Patten added a 581, while freshman Lars Lilleng carded a 575 in his first OVC event. Lilleng was named to the OVC Air Rifle All-Newcomer Team.
Goad was tabbed to the Smallbore All-OVC First Team, while Dirtz claimed a spot on the Smallbore All-OVC Second Team, joining freshman Kim Jettenberg on the team. Kim Jettenberg was one of two members on the OVC Smallbore All-Newcomer Team.
The Racers of Murray State (4676) claimed the 2021 OVC rifle title for the fifth time in the last six years. Morehead State (4656) finished second in the team standings.
JSU will travel to Oxford, Miss. Twice in the next two weeks with a match against the Racers on Feb. 14 before returning to the Ole Miss campus for the NCAA Sectionals on Feb. 20.
