Gamecocks Finish Seventh at Barstool's Let Them Play Classic

CHANDLER, Ariz. – After having its first regional appearance in nine years taken away, the Jacksonville State women's golf team got another chance thanks to the Barstool Sports Let Them Play Classic.
Barstool Sports rallied for the Ohio Valley Conference Champion Gamecocks and the other teams that had all three days of the 2021 NCAA Baton Rouge canceled due to course conditions. The Let Them Play Classic was put together in less than a week, giving the 12 teams and individuals not allowed to advance to the NCAA Championships an opportunity to play one more event this season.
10 teams and three individuals were able to take advantage of the opportunity, and JSU claimed a seventh-place finish in the event on Friday. The Gamecocks carried four players and counted their top three scores in each of the three rounds in the 54-hole event hosted on two courses at the Whirlwind Golf Club.
JSU finished the two-day event at 30-over par, finishing two shots ahead of East Tennessee State, eight ahead of Sam Houston and 12 better than Quinnipiac. North Texas won the tournament with an 11-under 637, seven shots better than second-place Purdue.
The Gamecocks were led by sophomore Claire Vermette, who tied for 11th with a 3-over 219 for the tournament. The St. Petersburg, Fla., native shot an opening round 77 on the Cattail Course before answering with a 2-under 70 in the second round on the Devil's Claw Course. She tamed the Cattail in her second attempt in Friday's final round, shooting an even-par 72.
Junior Ana Perez Altuna tied for 21st in the 47-player field after an 8-over 224 for the tournament. The native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, opened with a 74 on the Cattail on Thursday morning before an afternoon 74 on the Devil's Claw. Friday's final round saw her card a 76 to finish off her 224.
Senior Layne Dyar and freshman Berta Sanchez turned in identical scores of 80-77-78-235to tie for 41st in the event. Dyar wrapped up her final event for the Gamecocks after using the NCAA-granted COVID year to return and help lead the Gamecocks to the conference title.
Sanchez capped a freshman season that saw her join Vermette on the All-OVC squad before winning OVC Medalist, OVC Golfer of the Year and OVC Freshman of the Year. She also joined Altuna and Vermette on the OVC All-Tournament Team.
Audrey Tan of North Texas won medalist honors at the LTP Classic with a 9-under 207.
