Gamecocks take 10th
Freshman Julie Waldo fired off a pair of under par rounds to record her first career top five finish as the Jax State women's golf team placed 10th at the Diamante Invitational in Hot Springs, Ark.
Jax State was 10th of 20 teams in the field with an 11-over total of 875, posting team scores of 292, 290, and 293 in the three-day, 54-hole tournament. Sam Houston won the event with a total of 849.
"We played some decent golf this week but didn't take advantage of enough of the opportunities we had," said coach Robbie Fields. "I'm encouraged by the things we did show and look forward to seeing how that plays out the rest of our Fall stretch."
Waldo posted three birdies during Sunday's first round to finish with a two-under 70. She birdied the first hole on Monday but bogeyed 5, 9, and 10, but got back to even with an eagle on the 490-yard 11th to finish with a 72. She picked up her second eagle of the tournament on the 488-yard third hole on Tuesday and picked up three more birdies, finishing with a two-under 70.
"I am super proud of Julie for her performance this week, said Fields. "She has battled a lot early on in her freshman season but has shown so much grit and determination. It is really exciting to see that begin to pay off in what is going to be a bright career."
Waldo tied for first in the field in Par 5 scoring at -7 and was one of three players in the field with multiple eagles.
Sophomore Julie Ulvenes Kleppe tied for 31st with a three-over total of 219. Kleppe opened with a 74 on Sunday, then was even on Monday. After some early struggles on Tuesday, Kleppe got back to even with a birdie on 11, her third of the day before running into trouble on 16. She then birdied 18 to finish one over on the day.
Caitlin Shippam tied for 47th with a total of 221 (73-73-75) with all five of her birdies during the tournament coming on the back nine holes. Lara El Chaib tied for 60th with a total of 223 (75-73-75) and Sophia Blake rounded out the roster in 110th with rounds of 82, 84, and 75.
The Gamecocks return to action on Monday at the Keswick Cup at Virginia.
