
Sanchez Leads JSU to Second-Place Finish In Spring Opener

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. – The Jacksonville State women's golf team got its spring season off to a hot start on Tuesday, when the Gamecocks claimed second place at the Lady Bison Classic at Bay Point.
The Gamecocks bounced back from an opening-round 317 to shoot rounds of 302 and 303, respectively, and move into second in the 15-team event. They finished just six shots behind USC Upstate in first place on the par-72, 5,971-yard Niklaus Course at the Bay Point Golf Club.
Sophomore Berta Sanchez led the Gamecocks, finishing third in the field of 87 players. The native of Barcelona, Spain, rallied after an opening round 78 on Monday to card a second-round 72 and a final-round 73 to finish the 54-hole event with a 7-over 223. She was just three shots behind medalist Becca Earl of Wofford and one back of runner-up Beem Pabsimma of USC Upstate.
In her second round, which started on Monday and wrapped up on Tuesday morning, Sanchez holed her three-wood from 170 yards out to eagle the par-4 fourth hole. She would birdie the eighth hole en route to the even-par round of 72. She made three birdies in her final round on Tuesday.
Senior Valentina Curet tied for seventh with a 54-hole score of 229. The native of Santiago del Estero, Argentina, also rallied in her final two rounds after shooting an 81 to open the tournament. She fired back-to-back rounds of 74 to cap her two-day tournament at 13-over par and in the top 10.
Junior Claire Vermette tied for 24th after rounds of 79-77-19 gave the St. Petersburg, Fla., a 19-over 235 over her 54 holes. Freshman Paulina Perez Cubinas finished just one shot behind Vermette in a tie for 27th after the native of Catalonia, Spain, turned in rounds of 79-80-77 for a 54-hole score of 236. Senior Ana Perez Altuna rounded out the Gamecock lineup in a tie for 40th after shooting a 241 for the event.
Freshman Libby Kilbride finished 15th after shooting a 16-over 232 while competing as an individual. The Sheffield, England, native turned in rounds of 75-80-77 to post the third-best finish by a Gamecock golfer in the event.
The Gamecocks will return to the links on Feb. 26, when they compete in Gardner-Webb's Bright Creek Women's Invite at Bright's Creek Golf Course in Mill Springs, N.C.
