JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State University men's tennis team defeated the Tennessee State Tigers, 6-1, in a home match Sunday afternoon. The match was the first in 12 days after weather forced a postponement and cancelation.
The match against Tennessee was not originally scheduled and was added just a few days prior. JSU's match against West Alabama for Mar. 8 was pushed to Mar. 30 and Mar. 12
th's match against Young Harris was canceled.
With the 6-1 win over the former OVC foe, JSU moves to one game over .500 (5-4) on the year. Tennessee State falls to 2-11.
JSU opened the match with wins on all three doubles courts, taking the doubles point.
Aljaz Kaplja and
Joaquin Vallejo defeated the Tigers, 6-2, for the first doubles win, in the first flight. In the second flight,
Thomas Norwood and
Alex Vishnevskiy clinched the doubles points with a 6-3 win. In the third flight,
Maj Tomac and
Daisuke Inagawa added a win, 6-4.
In singles play, JSU earned straight set wins in five out of six matches.
Jordi Blanchar's win on the No. 5 court, 6-3, 6-2, clinched the match win. Vallejo and Tomac each earned straight-set wins in the No. 1 and No. 2 matches, respectively, to push JSU towards the finish line. Following Blanchar's match clinching win,
Vicente Arbelaez and Norwood added wins to push JSU to six points in the match.
With a 5-4 record on the season, JSU will play one more non-conference match before starting the ASUN portion of the schedule with North Alabama Mar. 18. The Gamecocks host Mercer on Mar. 15, at 10 a.m.
