
JSU Wraps Up Women's Golf Season in Fifth At ASUN Tourney

VALDOSTA, Ga. – Jacksonville State's 2021-22 women's golf season came to an end on Tuesday, when the Gamecocks finished fifth in the ASUN Championship at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club.
The Gamecocks shot a 307 in Tuesday's final round on the par-72, 6,213-yard layout, giving them a 54-hole score of 909. North Florida, ranked No. 48 nationally by GolfStat entering the tournament, won the 11-team event with a 4-over 868. The Ospreys finished four shots better than Kennesaw State in second.
Jacksonville State junior Claire Vermette was the Gamecocks' leading individual after the St. Petersburg, Fla., native finished the three-day tournament in a tie for 16th with a 10-over score of 226. Kennesaw State's Alizee Vidal won the 55-player field with a 5-under 211.
Vermette shot a final-round 77 on Tuesday to wrap up her tournament. She made one birdie on Tuesday and five in the tournament, giving her 82 this season – the third-most in a season in school history. She closes the season with a 74.42 scoring average, the fifth-lowest in a season in school history.
Sophomore Berta Sanchez bounced back after an opening round 79 on Sunday with rounds of 73 and 76, respectively, to climb into the top 20. The Barcelona, Spain, native tied for 20th with a total score of 228 and moved seven spots up the leaderboard in the final round. Sanchez also wrapped up an impressive season, with a 73.54 scoring average that is the second lowest in a season in school history.
Freshman Paula Perez Cubinas also tied for 20th in the field, the second-best finish in her young career. The native of Catalonia, Spain, shot a final-round 80 on Tuesday to cap her 228. The 54-hole score was sparked by her first-round 70 the first round of par or better in her career.
The senior duo of Ana Perez Altuna and Valentina Curet rounded out the JSU lineup in the ASUN Championship and wrapped up careers that saw them play more rounds than any players in school history. Altuna, a native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, caps a career that saw her play a school-record 132 rounds for the Gamecocks, while Santiago del Estero, Argentina, native Curet's 128 are the second-most of any player in JSU history.
They also wrap up their careers as JSU's top two leaders in career birdies. Curet carded a school-record 264 birdies in her career, one more than Altuna's 263 career birdies in second place. On Tuesday, Altuna finished 30th with a 231, while Curet finished 34th with a 234.
