HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Jacksonville State beach volleyball team closed out the ASUN Championships with a 4-1 win over Jacksonville University in pool play.
JSU fell behind early in the dual, 1-0, but earned four consecutive victories to win, 4-1, and move to 4-22 on the year. JU dropped to 10-23 with the loss.
Lena Kindermann and
Erin Carmichael earned their third win of the tournament, bringing their career-pair wins total to 20, the most in program history. Kindermann, a senior, finishes her career as the winningest player in program history with 26 career-wins.
"I'm really proud of Lena and Erin for breaking the schools all time win record," said Head Coach
Todd Garvey. "They both have worked really hard and improved so much this past few years. It's good to see them get rewarded for it."
After Jacksonville earned a straight set win in the fifth flight,
Brooklyn Schiffli and
Paulina Lindberg battled for a three-set win in the fourth. The duo earned a thrilling 24-22 win in the fourth set before dropping the second, 21-17. A dominant 15-5 win in the third set gave JSU its first point of the match.
Following the win in the fourth flight,
Kylee Quigley and
Claire Ochs controlled the first flight early, winning the first set 21-18. The duo closed out the straight set win, 22-20 in the second set.
On court three, Kindermann and Carmichael dropped the first set, 13-21, but earned a 21-14 win in the second to force a tie-breaking third. Shortly after JSU earned a second dual point with the win on court one, Kindermann and Carmichael clinched the match win with a 15-10 victory in the third set.
Peyton Pauze and
Taylor Thomas took an early advantage in the first set of the second flight, winning 21-17. JU fought back with a 21-18 win in the second to force a third. Pauze and Thomas rallied for a 15-12 win in the third to give JSU its fourth point in the dual.
Despite, finishing the ASUN Championships' pool play 1-4, the Gamecocks battled in every set and finished on a positive note.
"I was proud of our team for the improvement we showed this year and how hard we battled today against JU once we were already eliminated," added Garvey. "I think it says a lot about a team in how hard they compete when pride is the only thing you're playing for."
