NASHVILLE – The Spring 2023 season could not have started any better for Jacksonville State's women's tennis team. The Gamecocks had a dominant showing at Vanderbilt's Brownlee O. Currey Jr. Tennis Facility on Sunday, shutting out Tennessee State 7-0 to open the new year.
"This was a good win to start the year," Jax State head coach
Mike Mucci said after the decisive triumph. "I'm excited to see what this team can do and even after a 7-0 win, I know we can do more and continue pushing ourselves to be better. We'll get back to work on Tuesday and prepare for a very good Mississippi State team."
The Gamecocks (1-0) raced out to an early advantage after winning two of the three doubles matches. JSU's
Serafima Shastova and
Romane Mosse won 6-1 in the first flight and
Ella Tuomela and
Anna Syrova picked up a 6-2 triumph in the third flight to hand Mucci's squad a quick 1-0 lead. A close loss in the second doubles flight turned out to be the Tigers' (0-1) only victory of the day.
Jacksonville State showed no mercy in singles competition. Mosse (6-2, 6-4), Shastova (6-0, 6-1), Syrova (6-2, 6-3), Tuomela (6-1, 6-3), and
Polina Ramenskaja (6-0, 6-2) rolled to two-set wins in their respective flights. To top off an impressive day in the Volunteer State, junior
Dariana Prato survived in a three-set marathon, 6-1, 5-7, 14-12, to secure the 7-0 victory.
Sunday's blowout is the first 7-0 win for the Gamecocks since March 19, 2021, when they downed Eastern Illinois in Jacksonville. It serves as the fourth 7-0 triumph for Mucci in his three years leading the program.
Jax State's women are back at it on Friday in Starkville, Miss., as they take on SEC competition against Mississippi State. The Gamecocks return to the JSU Tennis Courts on Jan. 25 to face off against Lee (Tenn.) in their home opener.
