Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Jax State Shuts Out Alcorn State

LORMAN, Miss. – Gamecock women's tennis stayed hot early in the Spring 2023 season with a shutout victory at Alcorn State on Thursday afternoon. That 7-0 win in the Magnolia State helps Jacksonville State their weekend road trip off on the right foot and serves as their second Division I road win.

"Today we simply did our job," Jacksonville State head coach Mike Mucci said. "I'm really happy with how each girl came out and took care of business. We can still clean a few things up in our games and mental approach to things, but we will enjoy this one and get ready to play a good Jackson State team tomorrow."

Jax State (3-1) jumped on top quickly against the Braves (0-1). Alcorn State had just five eligible players, resulting in a win in the third doubles flight for Polina Ramenskaja and Zuzana Pavelekova. Meanwhile, the tandems of Irene Artigas/Romane Mosse and Anna Syrova/Ella Tuomela took care of business, securing 6-1 triumphs in doubles competition.

After claiming the doubles point, the Gamecocks earned a quick second point as Artigas picked up a forfeit win on the sixth singles court. In the remaining five flights, Jacksonville State tallied five two-set victories. Ramenskaja improved to 4-0 in singles play with a 6-0, 6-0, thrashing and Romane Mosse (6-0, 6-1) surrendered just one total game in the no. 1 singles flight. Pavelekova (6-2, 6-2), Syrova (6-0, 6-2), and Tuomela (6-2, 6-2) also scored dominant triumphs in their respective matches as well, leading to a 7-0 win for the Red-and-White.

Promising freshman Serafima Shastova missed her second straight match, but once again it did not matter in a quick match for Jax State.

With the win, Jacksonville State moves to 2-1 on the road and 2-1 against Division I opponents. The Gamecocks will finish play this weekend with a Saturday morning bout with the defending SWAC Champions, Jackson State. That non-conference match in Jackson, Miss., will begin around 11 a.m. and men's action will follow.
