Women's Tennis Sweeps Saturday Match with Young Harris

JACKSONVILLE – A perfect day of work at the JSU Tennis Courts led to a 7-0 victory for Jacksonville State's women's tennis team in Saturday's non-conference match with Young Harris. The Gamecocks claimed wins in each of the nine flights to tally their third sweep of the spring.

"Any time you win 7-0, you have to be pretty happy," Jacksonville State head coach Mike Mucci said after the triumph. "I still feel we have some things we can improve on both mentally and emotionally on the court when things aren't going our way. Overall, I'm happy with the ladies' performances, and we need to keep building momentum as we get into the meat of our schedule."

The Gamecocks (5-1) claimed the doubles point against the Mountain Lions (0-2) in under 20 minutes. Anna Syrova and Ella Tuomela tallied a 6-0 win in the third doubles flight, and Polina Ramenskaja and Serafima Shastova followed suit with a 6-2 victory shortly after. Irene Artigas and Romane Mosse also won their flight, 6-2, to cap off some flawless doubles action.

Singles action saw similarly dominant outings for Jax State. Ramenskaja earned a 6-1, 6-1, triumph in the no. 3 singles flight and Shastova downed Young Harris' top singles competitor 6-0, 6-2. Zuzana Pavelekova captured the match victory with a 6-2, 6-0, win on court five. Artigas (6-4, 6-1) and Mosse (6-4, 6-1) earned two-set decisions and Tuomela (5-7, 6-1, 10-8) got it done in three sets.

Jacksonville State has now won four matches in a row since a 4-3 setback at Mississippi State on Jan. 20. The Gamecocks will be in action next Sunday, Feb. 12, in Statesboro, Ga., for a non-conference pairing at Georgia Southern. That match against a strong Eagles program will begin around 12 p.m. CT.
