TUSCALOOSA – Jacksonville State men's tennis suffered a 7-0 loss in Sunday afternoon's non-conference affair at Alabama. The Gamecocks could not find their rhythm against a solid Crimson Tide bunch and saw a four-game winning streak end at the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Tennis Facility.
 
Alabama (6-1) entered the day undefeated but was embarrassed by 19^th-ranked Columbia, 7-0, on Sunday morning. That surprising beatdown had a veteran Tide team prepared for Jax State (4-2) once their 4 p.m. match rolled around.
 
The Crimson Tide claimed the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. Though the tandem of Konstantin Benneman and Alin Fatu had a 5-3 advantage in the no. 3 doubles flight, that pairing was unfinished.
 
None of the Gamecocks were able to force a decisive third set in singles competition. Xavier Sarda Marti started promising in the third flight, forcing a tiebreaker in the first set, but fell 7-6 (7-2), 6-4. None of his teammates got closer to a positive result in that 7-0 setback in Tuscaloosa.
 
Also of note, freshman standout Agustin Cuellar rejoined the team on Sunday afternoon after representing Bolivia in the Davis Cup on Thursday and Friday in Leszno, Poland. He battled well, but fell 6-3 in doubles action alongside Xavier Sarda Marti and dropped the no. 1 singles flight 6-3, 6-3.
 
Jacksonville State men's tennis returns to play on Saturday in South Carolina. The Gamecocks will travel to Greenville, S.C., for another non-conference test at Furman. That match will start at 1 p.m. Jax State's next home match will take place at 1 p.m. on Tues., Feb. 14, against UAB.
