JACKSONVILLE – Another accolade came to Jacksonville State's women's basketball program recently when junior Madison McCoy was named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team. This honor comes to McCoy after a productive campaign in which the Knoxville, Tenn., native served as the Gamecocks' top forward coming off the bench.
Â
"Madison is an extremely well-rounded kid," head coach Rick Pietri said. "She's somebody who has been a really great ambassador for our program, somebody who works hard every day in practice, and clearly is somebody who works hard every day academically. Because of the work she's put in, she most certainly deserves the honor that's been bestowed upon her."
Â
McCoy, who transferred from Walters State Community College prior to the start of the 2021-22 season, was once again a strong contributor for Pietri's squad in her second year in Calhoun County. She finished with 2.0 points and 3.8 rebounds per game, shot 33.9% from the field, and tallied 17 assists for the Gamecocks.
Â
Along with her impressive efforts on the hardwood, McCoy has also excelled in the classroom. She has garnered a 3.67 GPA in Jax State's Bachelor of Science in Accounting program and is on pace to graduate this Summer.
Â
This recognition from CSC is not the only academic honor earned by a member of the women's basketball team this season. Kennedy Gavin, a graduate forward who just concluded her final year of collegiate basketball, was an ASUN Women's Basketball All-Academic Team selection.
Â
After helping Jacksonville State to another ASUN Tournament appearance as a junior this past fall, McCoy will return to the program next season to serve as one of just a few upperclassmen for a squad set to lose five seniors. In addition, she will be part of the first Gamecock team to compete in Conference USA.
Â
Since 1952, College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA) has presented these awards annually to student-athletes in recognition of their outstanding academic and athletic achievements. CSC receives around 20,000 nominations during the academic year across all championship shorts, while only a fraction of those student-athletes earn Academic All-District and/or All-America honors.
