CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Gamecock women's tennis pushed their win streak to five in a row with a 6-1 drubbing of Queens (N.C.) on Friday morning. Once again, a quick start was the key for Jacksonville State in maintaining their unblemished conference mark.
"I'm happy the girls followed up the long drive and early morning by taking care of business," head coach
Mike Mucci said. "Credit to Queens for battling hard in doubles and on multiple courts, but ultimately I'm happy with how we handled the match. We'll now rest and prepare for Liberty on Sunday."
Jax State (14-3, 4-0) took a tight doubles point in the Tar Heel State. Freshmen
Irene Artigas and
Polina Ramenskaja rolled to a 6-1 victory on court three before Queens (5-12, 0-3) responded with a win in the no. 1 doubles flight. Fortunately,
Zuzana Pavelekova and
Anna Syrova clinched the opening point with a 6-4 triumph on court two to hand the Gamecocks an early advantage.
A rush of momentum from the doubles point helped mightily in singles competition.
Zuzana Pavelekova (6-0, 6-0) and Tuomela (6-0, 6-1) raced out to dominant wins before
Dariana Prato clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-1, result in the no. 4 singles showdown. Ramenskaja (7-5, 6-4) and Mosse (6-2, 2-6, 10-6) added individual victories later to add to the match win.
Syrova improved to 16-1 in doubles play this season with another two-on-two win on Friday. In addition, with positive decisions at Queens, Mosse and Pavelekova now lead the team with 12 singles wins each in 2023.
After winning their fourth consecutive ASUN Conference test, Jacksonville State heads north from Charlotte on Sunday morning for a league match at Liberty. First serve is set for 8 a.m. in Lynchburg, Va. Links to follow along with live stats will be provided at JSUGamecockSports.com.
