BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Gamecock beach volleyball fell to a pair of tough opponents to open the UAB Beach Classic on Friday morning. Jacksonville State lost 5-0 to UL Monroe in the opener before dropping a non-conference match to Austin Peay, 5-0.
Friday's showdown with the Warhawks (20-1) did not go as Jax State (0-11-3) had hoped. UL Monroe took control of the match early and posted four two-set triumphs in the Magic City. The lone three-setter came on court two, where
Kylee Quigley and
Luci Wilkinson battled before suffering a 21-19, 14-21, 12-15, heartbreak. With the win, red-hot ULM set a new program record for wins in a season.
Jacksonville State could not claim a win against Austin Peay (12-5) later on Friday morning. The Governors shined at Blazer Beach, holding off a stingy Gamecock group and tallying five victories in two sets. Once again Quigley and Wilkinson were Jax State's most consistent competitors, as the pair on court two earned 28 total points in a 25-11, 25-17, loss.
The Gamecocks conclude their action in the UAB Beach Classic on Saturday in Jefferson County. Jax State will have a rematch versus Mercer at 10 a.m. before taking on the host Blazers at 4 p.m.
