Jax State Falls in Mountain Brook

MOUNTAIN BROOK, Ala. – Gamecock women's tennis could not pick up some three-set breaks late in Saturday night's 4-2 loss to Austin Peay at the Mountain Brook YMCA. That setback in Jacksonville State's ASUN finale serves as their fourth straight defeat in league competition.
 
Saturday's match in Jefferson County, which opened with singles play, started with a few tight decisions. After a two-set result on court three helped the Governors (15-5, 6-2) out to an early lead, Jax State (14-7, 4-4) responded with two three-setters to claim the advantage on the scoreboard. Anna Syrova came from behind to win 1-6, 7-5, 7-5, on court two before Romane Mosse claimed a 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, result in the top flight. Unfortunately, Austin Peay would score three consecutive tight triumphs late in the match to clinch the 4-2 win in singles play.
 
With her singles triumph in Mountain Brook, Mosse improved to 13-7 in one-on-one action this Spring. The sophomore from Viroflay, France, is now tied with Zuzana Pavelekova and Dariana Prato with a team-best 13 individual wins in 2023. In addition, Syrova, a second-year Gamecock from Odessa, Ukraine, tallied her 11th victory in singles action.
 
Following Saturday's results, Jacksonville State heads into next week's ASUN Conference Tournament as the seven-seed. The Gamecocks will take on no. 10 North Alabama on Saturday in DeLand, Fla. The winner of that in-state rivalry match will advance to the ASUN Quarterfinals on Sunday, where they will take on the second-seeded Stetson Hatters.
