
Jax State Keeps Winning, Runs Win Streak to 23

ARLINGTON, Texas – The Jacksonville State bowling team continued its winning ways on Friday to start the Prairie View A&M Invitational, going 5-0 in Baker play with wins over four teams ranked in the Top 10.
The No. 1 Gamecocks (60-9) extended its program-record win streak to 23 matches with the five wins. They also head into Saturday's traditional matches in first-place in the stacked field of 12 teams after taking down 5,282 total pins on the first day at the International Training and Research Center.
The Gamecocks are the top-ranked team in the nation and going toe-to-toe with a field that features 10 of the Top 11 teams in the latest NTCA Coaches Poll. Friday's play saw Jax State take down No. 3 Youngstown State, No. 4 Louisiana Tech, No. 5 North Carolina A&T, No. 9 Stephen F. Austin and Southern University.
The day started with a 1,027-923 win over Stephen F. Austin, a match that saw the Gamecocks heat up after a slow start. A 145 in the first game resulted in the lineup of Keyla Covarrubias, Kayla Smith, Maranda Pattison, Rebecca Hagerman and Crystal Elliott settling in for four-straight games over 200 to post the 10-4-pin win over the Ladyjacks.
Match No. 2 was a 1,030-960 win over Southern that started with an early run that put the Jaguars ahead. They won the first two games and had an 18-pin lead over Jax State, but a 245-162 Gamecock win in the third game put them in front. Jax State used a 244 in the final game to finish off the Jaguars.
In the third match of the day, Jax State started strong and never looked back against NC A&T. The Gamecocks won all five games and cruised to the 1,116-925 win. The fifth-ranked Aggies came within 20 pins in just one game of the match.
Youngstown State also fell behind early in the fourth match and couldn't catch up, with Jax State using a 218-175 score in the first game to set the tone for a 1,045-967 win in the match. The Penguins pulled 10 pins closer in the second game but the Gamecocks pulled away in the final three.
The final match of the day was Jax State's closest but ended with a 1,064-1,035 win over LA Tech. The Gamecocks won big in the first two games, pulling ahead by 128 pins. LA Tech answered in the third and fourth games, cutting the Jax State lead to just 17 pins, but the Gamecocks closed the match out with a 234-222 win in the fifth and final game.
The Gamecocks will continue play in the traditional matches on Saturday, when they face No. 11 Sam Houston, No. 10 Maryville, host Prairie View A&M, No. 2 Vanderbilt and No. 7 Nebraska. All matches will be streamed online at BowlTV.com.
