
Ek, Rasmusson Lead Gamecocks Past UTEP on Saturday

EL PASO, Texas – The Jacksonville State rifle team edged UTEP in the first of two meetings between the two teams this weekend at the UTEP Rifle Range.
The Gamecocks combined a 2363 in air rifle and a 2312 in smallbore to post a final tally of 4575. Jax State finished eight marks ahead of the Miners aggregate total of 4667. The difference came down to Jax State's edge in smallbore.
Freshman Jenny Ek led the Gamecocks, finishing second overall after firing an 1173. Ek equaled UTEP's Carlee Valenta in combined total, but Valenta turned in more center shots with 79. Ek posted a 594 in air rifle and added a 579 in smallbore. Jax State sophomore Frans Rasmusson claimed bronze overall with an 1171. Rasmusson shared the top spot with Valenta with a 581 in air rifle. He capped off the day with a 590 in smallbore.
Senior Sam Burrow and freshman Alex Watts claimed top-10 spots on the overall individual leaderboard. Burrow claimed seventh place with a total of 1161, while Watts finished right behind Burrow with an 1159.
Senior Debi Weiser contributed to Jax State's air rifle result along with junior Annie Iannotti. Weiser registered a 591, while Iannotti recorded a 579. Senior Clark McWhorter bolstered the Gamecocks' smallbore mark with a 579 on Saturday.
The Gamecocks and Miners will face off against each other on Sunday to wrap up the weekend competition.
