MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A win in No. 4 singles by junior
Zuzana Pavelekova capped off an exhilarating comeback triumph for Gamecock women's tennis in Sunday's neutral site match with Central Arkansas. Though Jacksonville State got off to a bit of a slow start at the Leftwich Tennis Center in Memphis, Tenn., five singles results carried the team to their second victory in as many days.
Central Arkansas (4-6) opened hot in the Home of the Blues, taking two of the three doubles matches. The only two-on-two decision for Jax State (5-4) came on court three as Pavelekova and
Serafima Shastova combined for a 6-4 win.
UCA raced out to a quick singles victory in the sixth flight, building a 2-0 lead before Jacksonville State began to battle back. Shastova (6-3, 6-1),
Anna Syrova (6-3, 6-4), and
Irene Artigas (6-1, 6-1) posted two-set results in No. 1, No. 2, and No. 5 singles to give the Gamecocks the lead, and a thrilling three-setter from Pavelekova (5-7, 6-4, 6-2) clinched the hard-fought triumph.
Dariana Prato also tallied a three-set difference on court three, taking down Sumomo Hamanaga of the Sugar Bears, 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 6-3.
With the win in the Volunteer State, Jax State improves to 2-1 all-time against Central Arkansas. Following Sunday's decision and a victory at Arkansas State on Saturday, the Gamecocks are now winners of two straight heading into next week's action.
Jacksonville State women's tennis will look to keep its two-match winning streak alive as the squad hits the road again next weekend. Their non-conference slate continues on Saturday as the Red-and-White take on Kennesaw State. First serve in Kennesaw, Ga., is set for 12 p.m. CT.
