ATLANTA, Ga. – The Jacksonville State men's tennis team turned in its third straight win with a thrilling 4-3 decision over Georgia State on Wednesday afternoon.
The GSU match, which was an addition to the 2024 season due to a lost match with weather, began the stretch run for the Gamecocks who notched their 14th win of the season.
The Gamecocks tallied the first point of the match with the doubles point. The Jax State tandem of
Vanja Dobrnjac and
Lucius Soller claimed a 6-3 win over the Panthers' pairing of Naufal Kamaruzzaman and Diogo Morias, 6-3, at the No. 2 doubles spot. The critical point to get off to a good start came down to tiebreakers at No. 3. Jax State's team of
Liam Day and
Xavier Sarda Marti edged Baran Soyler / Edward Tymes, 7-6, by winning the tiebreaker.
With a 1-0 lead in the match, there were battles all throughout the six singles action. The Gamecocks sealed the match at No. 2 with a three-set marathon between Jax State's
Alin Fatu and GSU's Gabriele Datei. The two split the first two sets that ended in tiebreakers before Fatu ousted Datei in the deciding set, 6-1.
The match featured three courts that need a third-and-deciding set to determine the point. Day, capped off his day with a win at NO. 6 in three sets. After posting a win in the first set over Kamaruzzaman, he bounced back in the third set to dispatch Kamaruzzaman, 6-3. GSU picked up a point at No. 1 after Dobrnjac suffered a tough setback – 5-7, 7-5, 4-6.
Jax State added a point at No, 4 with
Matei Palcau carding a 6-1, 6-4 win over Max Weir.
The Gamecocks will be idle until April 6 when they travel to Radford, Virginia to face Radford. The trip wraps up on April 7 in Boiling Springs, N.C. with a contest with Gardner-Webb.
