Gamecocks To Host Chris Banister Golf Classic at Silver Lakes

GLENCOE – The Jacksonville State women's golf team will host the Chris Banister Golf Classic for the first time since the fall of 2021 beginning this weekend.
The Gamecocks will welcome seven other teams to their home course at Silver Lakes on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail and will play the three-day, 54-hole event on the Backbreaker and Heartbreaker courses. The par-72 layout will play 5,955 yards.
The resumption of Jax State's home tournament will add to a storied history of an event that dates back to 1996. This week will be the 27th playing of the Chris Banister Golf Classic, named in memory of the former Jax State assistant that passed away after five years with the program.
Three former winners will be in the field, including the Gamecocks. They have won their home event eight times, while two-time winner Chattanooga and one-time champion South Alabama will be in this year's tournament.
Play will begin on Sunday with the first 18 holes and will resume with 18 holes on Monday and the final round on Tuesday. Live scoring will be available through Golfstat.com.
True freshman Jinger Heath will play in the No. 1 spot for head coach Robbie Fields' Gamecocks at the Chris Banister. The Decatur, Ala., native is looking to bounce back from a disappointing outing last week at the UNF Collegiate. She has been Jax State's most consistent player this season and holds a 73.9 adjusted scoring average, winning for the first time at UNCG's Advance Golf Partners Collegiate back in February.
Redshirt freshman Rachel Camp will play in the No. 2 spot in her home tournament. The native of Peachtree City, Ga., finished 26th out of 97 players in a stacked field at UNF last week after a top-20 at UNCG. In her last time out, she carded back-to-back rounds under par to skyrocket up the leaderboard.
The Gamecocks' No. 3 player is also looking to build upon the momentum built in the final round of the UNF Collegiate. Junior Paula Perez Cubinas shot a 2-under 70 to finish that tournament. She is the only member of the Gamecocks' team that was on the 2021 team that won the last Chris Banister.
True freshman Ashley Stevenson will play at the No. 4 spot for Jax State. The native of Fontainebleau, France, has been better than her competition for the most part this season, holding a 236-225-25 record.
Sophomore Ebby Somers rounds out Jax State's lineup and looks to return to the form in which she started the season. The Valdosta, Ga., native and the Gamecocks' second-most experienced player opened the fall with a atop-30 and then a top-10 at the USA Intercollegiate.
The Gamecocks will be paired with UTC in Sunday's first round and will begin play when Somers tees off on Backbreaker No. 1 at 8:30 a.m. CT. Admission is free for all patrons.
