Name: Rachel Barnes
Sport: Assistant Women's Basketball Coach
What inspired you to become a coach, and who were your role models along the way?
The love of the game honestly. I started playing basketball at a young age, and I knew playing wouldn't last forever, so the next best thing was coaching in my eyes. My role models I would have to say my family. They didn't all play basketball, but they played sports, so they knew what it took to be the best version of themselves, which pushed me as well.
Can you share a defining moment in your career that shaped your coaching philosophy?
I would have to say when I first started coaching, I had a player that was very defiant, wanted to do things her way, didn't want to listen and just wanted to do what she wanted to do. I eventually sat down with her and had a deeper conversation with her, and she explained to me what was going on outside of basketball that was affecting her in some ways. So, we both sat there and came up with some solutions that could help her progress during her time in school. After she graduated, years later she sent me a text and said thank you. I use this example because for me it's more than just this moment in basketball.
How has coaching changed your perspective of women in sports?
When I first started coaching, I thought I had to be tough and strict. As I grew older and grew more into the game I learned so much more and knew yes, I can be tough but, It's more than the X'S and O's. It's about uplifting and building strength, confidence, skill and courage within these young women. Things that they will need and use beyond the game that they love. That I believe is something these young women need and they respond to.
What advice would you give women aspiring to pursue a career in coaching or athletics?
Grab that seat belt and buckle up because you are in for a ride! This game is fun and it's growing. Women's basketball players are making statements, coaches are making statements, Women period are making statements. Sometimes its more then just coaching these young women, it's about helping them grow as well. Be their coach and be a mentor.
What does Women's History month mean to you personally?
It's a reminder that WE ARE HERE AND WE AREN'T GOING ANYWHERE!! We need to keep progressing and keep pushing for what we know we deserve. Continue to speak up and fight for women in sports.
