ATHENS, Ga.—Jax State finished 10th at the University of Georgia's Liz Murphey Collegiate over the weekend, posting the third-best third round score of the tournament.
The Gamecocks posted a 54-hole team score of 899, bouncing back from a first round score of 309 with a 12-over score of 300 in Sunday's second round, and finally with a two-over score of 290 in Monday's final round.
Georgia won the event by three shots over Rutgers with a total of 875.
"This a very encouraging week for us, especially playing the way we did today to finish out the tournament," said coach Robbie Fields. "We have seen a lot of growth this spring in how we started the front-nine in the first and final rounds and showed some much-needed grit in round 2 after a rough start. It is exciting to finish off the week with our best round of the season and jump up the leaderboard in a strong field like this one. I'm proud of the hard work this team has been putting in and the results that are starting to show from that."
Sophomore Lara El Chaib was the top finisher for the Gamecocks in 16th place with a six-over 54-hole score of 222. She carded three-over rounds of 75 in each of the first two rounds, followed by an even-par round of 72 in the final round.
"Lara stepped up with some solid play throughout the week," said Fields. "It wasn't always easy, but she dug deep to get what she could out of the first two rounds before a solid even-par finish. She had such great ability we are starting to see during an important stretch of the season."
Sophomore Rebekka Stutley was 34th at +10 for the tournament. Stutley also posted an even par round of 72 on Monday, bouncing back from a 79 in the second round after a 75 to open the tournament.
Freshman Julie Kleppe was 42nd with a +11 total. Kleppe recorded a pair of one-over 73s in the second and the third after an 81 to open play on Saturday. Senior Ebby Somers was three shots back in 54th with rounds of 81, 76, and 73. Redshirt junior Rachel Camp rounded out the lineup a shot back in 56th with totals of 78, 76, and 77.
Next up for the Gamecocks is the Golfweek/Stifel Spring Challenge at Caldonia Golf and Fish Club in Pawley's Island, S.C.
