Gamecocks Claim Second NCAA Bowling Title in Three Years

CLEVELAND—Jax State capped off an incredible 103-10 season with its second NCAA Collegiate Bowling title with a 4-1 win over Wichita State in the Baker best of seven national championship match.

"I'm so glad that they were very confident in what was going to happen," said coach Shannon O'Keefe.

Jax State dropped the first game by eight pins after Wichita State converted six consecutive strikes to close out the game for a 216-208 win.

The Gamecocks came roaring back with a 246 in the second game for a 33-pin win. Erin Klemencic, Emma Yoder, and Kaitlyn Stull opened up with a triple and Gianna Brandolino struck out in the 10th to close it out.

In the third, the Gamecocks were able to overcome an open third frame with seven straight strikes for a 240-196 win to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

"We knew we needed to change balls on the left lane, but we knew those balls were the right balls for the right lane," said O'Keefe. "But then Annalise and Gianna did what they do and just fell in our favor."

Klemencic, Emma Yoder, Kaitlyn Stull, and Annalise OBryant opened with strikes in the fourth as the Shockers settled for spares in three of the four frames to take a 62-33 lead into the TV break. A strike from Stull in the eighth clinched the game for a 185-169 win.

A strike in the ninth in Game five by OBryant cut the Wichita State lead to 13. Brandolino got the 10-pin to drop late for a strike on her first ball of the 10th which the Shockers answered. Brandolino struck again on her second ball, but a nine gave the Gamecocks the advantage and Brandolino added another strike to put the exclamation point on the title.

"Every one is going to feel different just because of the people that are with you," said O'Keefe. "This is a really young team. This is an incredibly talented team."

Klemencic was named the most outstanding bowler of the championship, carrying a 266 Baker average during Friday's first two rounds and struck five times during the championship match. Stull and Brandolino joined her on the all-tournament team.

The Gamecocks will compete for another national championship next week in Green Bay during the USBC's Intercollegiate Team Championship and Intercollegiate Singles Championship where Stull, Brandolino, and Yoder will compete.
