JACKSONVILLE—The Jax State women's golf team will play in the Conference USA Championship starting Monday at Stonebriar Country Club in Frisco, Texas.
The championship is 54 holes over three days and will play at least 6300 yards each day on the Fazio Course which opened in 2000 and was designed by its namesake Tom Fazio.
In their last regular season tournament, the Gamecocks posted a fifth-place finish at the Golfweek/Stifel Spring Challenge led by
Rachel Camp's seventh-place finish. The Peachtree City, Ga. native had her best round of the season with a two-under 69 after an even-par 71 in the second round at Caledonia. During the 54-hole tournament, Camp had eight birdies.
A challenging schedule this season is starting to pay dividends at the end of the year with Jax State playing the back halves of tournaments better than the first. The Gamecocks have averaged 306 as a team in the first round, but have averaged 297 in second and third rounds this season.
At the Golfweek/Stifel Spring Challenge, the Gamecocks had the lowest round three total with an eight-over 292 which was the lowest by two shots.
During last year's Conference USA Championship, the Gamecocks got off to a strong start with a one-under team score and held the lead going into the final round until Western Kentucky was 10 shots better than everyone to come away with a six-shot victory.
Lara El Chaib was third in the field as a freshman and
Rebekka Stutley finished just outside of the top 10 in her first semester as a collegiate at last year's championship.
Play begins on Monday with the five Jax State golfers starting in the second wave of tee times and will be paired with Sam Houston starting at 9:20 a.m. Central Time.
